EMEC is the world’s only accredited test centre for marine energy converters at full scale in open seas, the wave site was commissioned in 2003 and the tidal site in 2007.

JWG Consulting has worked for many years on development of the EMEC test facilities on Orkney. This has included site selection, preliminary engineering, acting as Client Technical Representative for design and construction of facilities.

JWG Consulting has helped EMEC develop an integrated management system for Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental matters and provided leadership to achieve accreditation as a measurement laboratory under international standard ISO17025:2005.

In addition to testing, EMEC encourages the industry by participation in R&D projects and has led the development of draft standards and guidelines which are now moving into the International standards-making phase through IEC that has established a technical committee on Ocean Energy (TC/114)

John Griffiths is a Non-Executive Director of EMEC Ltd.

The Carbon Trust  - Marine Energy Accelerator

The Marine Energy Accelerator is helping marine energy cost reduction through 3 distinct strands.

Next Generation Concepts
Developing new device concepts that could significantly marine energy lower costs

Device Components
Research into lowering costs of specific components in existing marine energy devices

Installation, Operation & Maintenance
Developing strategies on how to improve ways marine energy devices can be installed, operated and maintained at a lower cost.

JWG Consulting was part of the Technical advice team that reviewed over 30 concepts, ran six device component research topics and a number of studies on deployment and installation methods for ocean energy converters as well as participating in the final report.
